The old interior-exterior houses had an element, the gallery, which worked very well, providing light and ventilation to several rooms. A model that does not accept current regulations, because it concatenates several rooms.
Can Pep Simó is, above all, an exercise in distribution. A townhouse with a garden, with a covered porch and 2 windows to the outside. The opposite part of the plant, without natural light; therefore, only one of the rooms could enjoy light and exit to the garden.
By means of an enclosure of sliding wooden panels –a trombe wall-, the Can Pep Simó gallery can be closed in winter and keep the heat accumulated during the day for the rooms, more interiors; in summer, it insulates them from the heat. In addition, it prolongs garden activities in summer, with other more protected and bright ones in winter, such as an office or children’s playroom alternatively.
The arrangement of the 2 rooms preceded by the gallery of sliding walls is also a game of circulations, of flow: the spaces can be lived as loft or partially closed, and access to the garden from any of them respecting the privacy of the adjoining one. In addition, the courtesy bathroom can be associated with the secondary bedroom in perfect privacy, almost like a second suite.
A touch of marble could not be missing, in a kitchen in the Mediterranean tradition, but it is not easy to find a beautiful piece of 3.20m marble. Corian, more comfortable to use, was chosen for the countertop, and the reference to marble, more discreet, was transferred to the wall; it is not imposed on the view from the social space, it only appears when one is preparing to cook …
