A Frenchman from Tokyo returning to Europe falls in love with a house while leafing through a magazine in the dentist’s office in Paris. The name is noted: Can Gadja, Jaime Romano. On another occasion, he asks a friend of his who works for the Bouygues construction company for advice on architects in Ibiza. His friend gives him 2 names, among them… Jaime Romano.
There are projects in which the customer’s attitude must be highlighted. Without haste, absolute confidence … Casa Altea was developed over time, without pressure, by Jaime Romano and Augusto Román, a Peruvian architect. And the architecture was intensifying the place.
An old house already existed, nestled among the pines, on a steep terrain. Located on the edge of the mountain, at the intersection of two slopes, within a dense urbanization in which real monsters huddled behind … a topographic survey was essential to play with the slopes of the terrain.
In addition, the pine forest is very sensitive and delicate; In the contract with the builder, each tree was numbered and priced -high-, so that the excavator was careful…
The client spoke of a house-town, with several nuclei disconnected from each other; plants that could be separated from the rest even at the facilities level, depending on the number of occupants. A flexible space in an open universe, somewhat Zen and mineral, in which differentiated atmospheres are generated, areas of intimacy are created and visions of the landscape are intensified.
We propose an adaptable house, like an artifact that expands and contracts in a bellows movement that follows the rhythm of the family’s life. To achieve a continuum with the pine forest, we work with black stone from Moragues, which allows us to make exterior pavements, retaining walls and even stairs and, suddenly, manages to blur the transition between the construction and the rock of the Mediterranean hill.
